This weekend marked the first big weekend of racing in the 2020 race season all across California. Paddling Enthusiast and Local Team riders across the country dusted off their boards, boats and paddles and hit the water to test themselves against their local race scene.
In Long Beach California, a small group of about 50 SoCal sup paddlers competed in a 2 lap 5 mile sup race. A small group quickly formed off the front with Jake Graham (Hippostick Paddles), Tyler Basher (Infinity Sup Boards and Werner Paddles), Ryland Hart (404 Sup Boards and Hippostick Paddles), Tyler Nislen (StarBoard Sup Board and QB Paddles), Thiago Giacomellii (Naish Sup Boards and Kialoa Paddles). They battled the whole first lap trading leads and were joined at the end of the lap by Danny Ching (404 Sup Boards and Hippostick Paddles). Each lap had a beach run transition and all the guys were even at that point. During the second lap Ryland Hart took the lead and paddles the lead group down to 3 paddlers. That left Ryland, Tyler and Danny to fight it out in a sprint finish. Danny 1st just steps ahead of Ryland and then Tyler for the top 3 finish. Thomas finished 4th ahead of Thiago. Chasing the lead group solo all day was John Gabriel (404 Sup Boards and Hippostick Paddles), in 6th.
In the women’s race, a small pack formed immediately after the start. It consisted of Abby Baker (404 Sup Boards and Hippostick Paddles), Erika Pilgrim (Brawner Sup Boards and QB Paddles) and Jade Howsen (SIC Sup Boards and QB Paddles). They battled from start to finish in a tight pack all the way to the beach. Jade hit the beach first followed by Abby and Erika. However, the race was decided in the run finish with Abby pulling ahead in the last few steps to our lean Jade for the win. Switching from OC1 to Sup for the weekend and paddling solo for the whole 5 miles was 404/Hippostick rider/owner Leah Ching in 4th.
